COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rocky Mountain SAR is planning to convert the old Spann Elementary School on Pueblo’s east side into a grocery store and community center—supporting the area’s needs after receiving a $150,000 planning grant from the Healthy Food Financing Initiative. The group will hold public meetings and aims to have a final plan by the end of the year.  KOAA
  • Pueblo County High School made a teen's wish come true as 14-year-old Jesus Lucero, who has a rare form of epilepsy, got to see WWE wrestler John Cena and attend a wrestling event after the school held an assembly on March 19. The school and its fundraisers raised over $3,200 to support Jesus and other local kids with wish grants.  KOAA

CRIME NEWS

  • Neighbors in Bessemer were shocked by Tuesday's officer-involved shooting in Pueblo — residents near the scene said additional police presence is needed and tougher crime laws should be enforced.  KOAA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado communities have begun applying for grants to reduce human–black bear conflicts from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Human–Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant Program. Applications are due May 30 at 5 p.m.—the program offers grants from $50,000 to $500,000 out of a $1 million fund and will announce winners later this spring.  KOAA
