COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Pueblo Zoo welcomed Mrembo, a 1-year-old Watusi bull, in February who is in quarantine and training before he meets other farm animals. The zoo said goodbye to three animals—Olive the Pallas's cat that died unexpectedly from toxoplasmosis and two elderly muntjac deer that were humanely euthanized on March 11 due to health issues. - ➤ Farmers and gardeners in southern Colorado are preparing for the spring season despite the snowy weather. They are adjusting planting schedules and tending their fields—hoping for better conditions when warmer weather arrives. KKTV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Pueblo Police Captain returned home Thursday night after being shot on Tuesday when suspect Billy Soto reportedly opened fire on officers — Soto was killed in return fire and two other injured officers remain stable. KKTV
- ➤ On Wednesday night, 16-year-old River Evans, who is deaf, blind and has a cognitive disability, was last seen getting into an unknown truck in the 530 block of Brown Avenue—officials ask anyone with information to call 9-1-1. KKTV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fountain Creek Watershed District will host a public meeting on Tuesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. at American Legion VFW Post 38 in Fountain to discuss the Southmoor Drive Creek Restoration Project — the meeting will cover project updates and include a short walking tour of the site. Community members can email to get a Zoom link for virtual attendance or RSVP to attend in person. KOAA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Desert Hawk Golf Course, plans to replace its 58-year-old sprinkler system will cost $5.3 million — $2 million more than expected — as leaks waste millions of gallons of water. The management board said they will seek grant funding and decide on a solution by mid to late summer while reviewing budget and ownership issues. Pueblo Chieftain
