COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A study by World Population Review ranked Colorado as the seventh friendliest state in the nation—using social media polls and tipping data. The research shows that while residents are welcoming, the state is not the nicest or meanest overall. Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ Pueblo Cooperative Care is raising $15,000 to fund its mobile shower program that will run through the summer, offering free showers and other vital services. The program served over 8,000 people in the past two years (Stephanie Walker noted it assists those seeking housing, employment, and personal care). KOAA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Pueblo police say shots were fired during an attempted car break-in—officials report the victim confronted the suspect in a parking lot. KKTV
- ➤ Pueblo police chief blamed the Colorado Legislature for rising violent crime after three officers were shot on March 18, while state Sen. Nick Hinrichsen and other local lawmakers urged waiting for a full investigation before assigning blame—some officials pointed to issues with bail and sentencing that allowed the suspect to remain free despite a long criminal record. - ➤ Pueblo police confirmed an apparent murder-suicide when they determined that Gerald Holmes fatally shot his wife Sherri before taking his own life in their home on March 16 (the couple was identified by the county coroner). Pueblo Chieftain
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pueblo East High School will induct four alumni—Jim Bean, Robin Brooks, Wendell Grishow and Steve Henson—into its Golden Eagle Hall of Fame on April 3. The ceremony will begin at 10:13 a.m. in the school gym and will be followed by a cocktail hour and dinner at Pueblo Country Club where $65 tickets will be available with reservations due by March 26. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A major section of Tejon Street was closed for a revitalization project that began Monday—city officials recommend drivers use parking garages during the work. KKTV
- ➤ Pueblo City Council unanimously voted to move a sit-lie ordinance to its final vote next month — scheduled for April 14. If passed, the ordinance will let police issue tickets to people sitting or lying on sidewalks near business areas. KOAA
- ➤ Pueblo firefighters will soon receive new fire shelters to improve safety in the field — the shelters are made from aluminum foil, silica cloth and fiber glass to help reflect heat when firefighters are trapped in a wildfire. The department received $11,000 from the El Pomar Foundation to purchase the equipment. KOAA
