Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pueblo City Council voted on an ordinance Monday night at 7:00 p.m. to set local rules for natural psychedelic mushrooms as the city prepares for future healing center applications after voters legalized clinical use and lawmakers set state guidelines in 2022 and 2023. The ordinance would require natural medicine businesses to be 1,500 feet from schools (up from 1,000 feet) and have proper air filtration to control odors.  KKTV
  • The city of Pueblo will hold a special election on May 6 to vote on Ballot Initiative 2A, which asks if Pueblo should cancel its contract with Black Hills Energy and look into other ways to lower power rates. City officials say studies indicate a full takeover is not possible, but a yes vote (which does not mean the city will own the utility right away) will support further study of options that include running a utility outside city limits.  Pueblo Chieftain
  • Pueblo City Council postponed a vote on a sit-lie ordinance until April 28th. The proposed ordinance would ban sitting, kneeling, reclining or lying on sidewalks, streets, curbs, parking spaces and alleys from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., receiving police and local business support but facing criticism from community members — including the elderly and disabled — who worry about losing a safe spot to sit.  KOAA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A UCHealth report shows the need for liver transplants among young people in Colorado is increasing due to more alcohol use—especially among young women. Experts note the number of transplants jumped from one case in 2016 to 19 in 2023 after heavier drinking during the pandemic.  KOAA
