CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A shooting occurred Tuesday around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Northern Avenue in Pueblo, injuring one person who was taken to a hospital and no arrests have been made according to the sheriff's office. KOAA
- ➤ Pueblo police are investigating a shooting that took place early Tuesday near a home on Wymoing Avenue southeast of Lake Minnequa Reservoir — one victim suffered serious injuries though both are in stable condition. KOAA
- ➤ Taggart Reike, 36, was arrested on April 25 after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at his Avondale home where his 18-year-old wife was injured and treated before being taken to a hospital—he now remains in Pueblo County Jail on a $50,000 bond. KOAA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Pueblo School District 60 Board voted 3-2 to deny Chavez-Huerta Preparatory Academy’s request to end its charter agreement, requiring the school to remain until June 30. The charter school is appealing to the Colorado Department of Education, which will decide in May. KOAA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday Morning, April 29, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell and ICE held a press conference where they explained the detention of Luis Sanchez-Chavez, a person of interest in a homicide case. Mikesell said Colorado laws such as SB25-276 and HB23-1100 restrict police from holding suspects for ICE and increase risks for officers and the community, and he urged a meeting with state leadership to address these issues. - ➤ Seven candidates, including incumbents (Brian Gray and Joe Mahaney), are running for three seats on the Pueblo West Metro District Board of Directors election on May 6. Voters must mail ballots by April 29 or drop them off and vote in person from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pueblo County Election office (201 W. Eighth St. on the seventh floor). Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ Pueblo PD will host a community meeting on the southeast side on May 8 at 6 p.m. at Zaragoza Hall where Chief Noeller and Mayor Graham will provide updates (including statistics and answers to questions). City of Pueblo
- ➤ Rep. Crank wrapped up his first 100 days in office by stating that Space Command must remain in Colorado Springs because moving it would cost billions (he noted his military argument) and said he will fight against job cuts at the Air Force Academy while urging caution on tariffs. He also said he will not give groups seeking to defund the police a platform for disruption. KOAA
- ➤ On April 28, Pueblo City Council approved $810,145 from 2016 ballot funds for the construction phase of the Eastside Pedestrian, Parking and Streetscape Improvements Project near El Centro del Quinto Sol Park—this work will upgrade sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, lighting and parking. Public Works director Andrew Hayes said the project will begin this summer—completion is set for December 31. City of Pueblo
