COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mark Salazar, a former gang member, started the Hard Knox Gang Prevention and Intervention program almost 10 years ago in Pueblo to help current gang members—kids and teens included—find jobs, finish community service and learn new skills. He uses activities like chess at Lucero Library to teach life lessons and show that there is a better way than gang life.  KKTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters have brought the house fire on North Tejon Street under control and are monitoring the situation for any changes (officials have not provided additional details).  KKTV
  • On Wednesday afternoon, a man died at Lake Pueblo State Park when he tried to save several children struggling in the water (spokesperson confirmed).  KKTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Kevin Wells shot his girlfriend at Mountain Shadows Apartments on Tuesday, May 13—he admitted the crime on a phone call to his father and boss—and was arrested in Pueblo County before being booked on first-degree murder charges in Colorado Springs.  FOX21
  • The Colorado Springs Police arrested a fourth suspect, Darlin Josue Hernandez Vega, in a multi-jurisdictional burglary investigation that spans over 50 cases across areas including Pueblo—officers recovered stolen appliances, tools and construction materials at a local storage facility and took him into custody without incident.  KKTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 1,480 students will graduate this week from Pueblo Community College and CSU Pueblo. Pueblo Community College held ceremonies on May 15 and will host another at 6 p.m. on May 25 while CSU Pueblo will hold its commencement at ThunderBowl on May 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. — with special awards and former president Timothy Mottet addressing the graduates.  Pueblo Chieftain

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Polis ordered flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Peace Officer Memorial Day (a day to remember officers who died on duty) and the order stayed in effect until sunset.  KOAA
