A felon on parole was taken back into custody after he allegedly fled two crashes and assaulted a southern Colorado officer last week—police said.

On Monday afternoon, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office asked for help identifying a man seen near a gray Honda Accord at a Pueblo West Walmart on 78 N.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said 50-year-old Jason Monett threatened to shoot deputies at his Pueblo West home on Sandusky Drive on Sunday and was arrested after hours of negotiations — a search of his vehicle turned up 11 firearms with assorted ammunition and he now faces first degree assault charges.

State leaders signed HB25-1171 on Monday (which bars people with a first-degree vehicle theft from possessing a gun) to cut auto theft and gun violence; Pueblo Police Chief Chris Noeller said additional legislative changes are needed to further protect our community.

Deputy Chris Carter and his K9 partner Zeus and Lt. Bethany Solano were recognized by the Southern Colorado Law Enforcement Association as uniformed and non-uniformed officers of the year for their dedicated work in 2024.

Carter deployed Zeus 30 times for arrests and seizures — while Solano led over 30 investigations with strong leadership in the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Governor Jared Polis visited the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce to sign bills on tariff adjustments, weapon possession laws for previous offenders and necessary document program changes — he later signed bills in Colorado Springs on treatment access, community-based care for seniors, advanced industries tax credits and spousal maintenance guidelines. These actions seek to enhance safety, victim support and healthcare services statewide.

Governor Jared Polis signed several bills into law during stops in Pueblo and Colorado Springs; at Mountain Shadows Park he signed two measures that let patients try individualized treatments and let senior care providers offer community-based services & at the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce he signed House Bill 1171 banning gun ownership for anyone convicted of first degree motor vehicle theft.
