  • More than 100 volunteers spent Friday morning placing over 1,600 flags on veterans' graves at the Academy Cemetery—volunteers from across the state joined to honor local heroes, including Pueblo native Medal of Honor recipient Bill Crawford, ahead of Memorial Day.  KOAA
  • Local vendors and police in Pueblo are preparing for the 50th Annual Territory Days, with 100,000 visitors expected over the weekend — officials are taking steps to ensure public safety.  KKTV
  • The Hard Knox Gang Prevention and Intervention Program has worked for 10 years to reduce gang violence in Pueblo by offering group sessions, mentoring and chess programs.   • Colorado motorcycle deaths increased 57% since 2015 with a record 165 fatalities recorded in 2024 and a Pueblo motorcyclist was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver on May 8 — officials urge riders and drivers to wear helmets and obey traffic laws to prevent further tragedies.  Pueblo Chieftain

  • Whataburger opened its first Pueblo location on May 23 at 2850 W. Pueblo Blvd.—drawing a large crowd eager to sample favorites like jalapeño burgers and Whatawings while the 24-hour restaurant, open all days except Christmas, plans a second store on the North Side.  Pueblo Chieftain

CRIME NEWS

  • Colorado law enforcement agencies are stepping up DUI patrols during Memorial Day weekend and will continue these efforts until May 28 to remove impaired drivers from the roads. The Colorado Department of Transportation advises travelers to plan for a sober ride as heavy traffic marks the start of the 100 deadliest days of summer — a period when impaired driving crashes increase.  KOAA
  • The Pueblo Police arrested 20-year-old Brandon Duenez-Vallejo on May 20 after a custody dispute led him to fire a rifle shot into a car carrying a victim and a child near the 600 block of Alpine Avenue—he now faces charges including attempted murder, assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and illegal discharge of a firearm.  FOX21

  • On May 23, Pueblo West High School held its commencement at Cyclone Stadium—seniors received diplomas and listened to speeches from Principal Jamison Wagner and guest Magistrate Tonya Luna, marking the milestone for the class of 2025.  Pueblo Chieftain

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pueblo AMR held an event on May 22 where cardiac arrest survivor Jay Kent met the EMTs who saved his life after he collapsed last August from asymptomatic COVID-19 and pneumonia + his recovery and the agency’s 14.4% survival rate underline the importance of quick CPR and calling 911. The event also honored the EMTs for their life-saving efforts in past rescues and their commitment to updated cardiac care guidelines.  Pueblo Chieftain
