Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A disabled Marine veteran who lost his lower right leg in Iraq received a new adapted Toyota Highlander on June 28 in Pueblo thanks to funding from the VA and America’s Fund and the help of local advocates — a move that will ease his mobility. He will soon have the vehicle fitted with a wheelchair rack and hand controls to further support his independence.  Pueblo Chieftain

BUSINESS NEWS

  • E.W. Scripps announced a swap deal with Gray Media that will let Scripps acquire KKTV in Colorado Springs and expand its news coverage in western Colorado, pending FCC approval. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter — a move that will form a duopoly in Colorado Springs and broaden local media service.  KOAA
  • After a 20-day strike, Pueblo and Pueblo West Safeway workers returned to work yesterday after reaching a tentative agreement that gives wage increases, fully funded health and pension benefits, and job security. The deal ended the use of temporary replacement workers—keeping all employees in their original jobs—and includes a test-and-learn trial to study staffing improvements.  Pueblo Chieftain

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In southern Colorado, experts explained that flash floods occur quickly when heavy rain falls on moist ground and burn scars make the soil waterproof — increasing risks during storms. The National Weather Service said it will issue flash flood warnings when criteria are met and noted its Pueblo office remains well-staffed despite national cuts.  FOX21

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado joined 19 other states in suing the federal government to block ICE from accessing Medicaid recipients' personal data. Attorney General Phil Weiser said the suit follows a detailed request from the federal government and raises concerns for Medicaid enrollees (including about 21,000 undocumented immigrants).  KOAA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Colorado Springs baby named Lyla spent 86 days in the NICU after doctors repaired a severe hole in her diaphragm and used a heart lung bypass machine to help her breathe at birth. Her parents say her recovery gives hope to other families facing this rare condition.  KOAA
