Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

  • More than 160 dogs were rescued from a property in Delta during an animal cruelty investigation, and National Mill Dog Rescue in Peyton provided emergency care including grooming after removing 168 pounds of matted fur — the dogs are now stable and will soon be up for adoption.  KOAA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pueblo public schools will reopen soon as District 70 students return on August 11 and District 60 students begin classes on August 19—each district's calendar lists breaks and graduation dates.  Pueblo Chieftain
  • Rae Carnevale, a licensed mental health clinician, is running for one of the open seats on the Pueblo D60 School Board this November. She says she will improve equitable education — by adding mental health resources and support for learning challenges — and will carefully review the impact of school closures on local neighborhoods.  Pueblo Chieftain

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Colorado DMV warned on Thursday that some drivers received texts falsely claiming unpaid tickets and threatening prosecution, registration suspension and the loss of driving privileges. Officials said the DMV does not send texts for payments and urged residents to avoid clicking links or sharing personal information (they also advised changing passwords and contacting banks as needed).  KKTV
  • Today, Pueblo’s Code Enforcement team reported more than 300 abandoned homes, with 197 registered (owners were notified) and 125 with liens (awaiting repairs) as its nine officers check neighborhoods. The team uses a three-month timeline to give owners time to fix the violations.  KOAA
  • Seventeen Colorado sheriffs from counties including Pueblo sent a joint letter on July 10 to Governor Polis, saying the inmate transfer backlog and low per diem reimbursements are forcing local jails to pay much higher costs — they urged the governor to speed up transfers, adjust rates, and boost mental health service capacity.  FOX21
