- ➤ Pueblo Parks and Recreation is hosting the inaugural Steel City Arkansas River Festival, SCARF on July 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at venues including the Nature Wildlife Discovery Center, the new WaterWorks Park and the kayak course near Pillars Park along the Arkansas River—offering competitive events such as the Build Your Own Boat Race and Freestyle River Surf Competition along with community activities like the Paddle and Bike Parade and a Rubber Duck Race that will fund youth scholarships. - ➤ The Pueblo West Safeway evacuated after a bomb threat was reported at the US Bank inside the store—deputies and the fire department are on scene and the public is asked to avoid the area as authorities assess the threat's credibility. KOAA
- ➤ A Pueblo trial for first-degree murder ended in a mistrial on July 17—after a juror’s question raised concerns—and David Martinez, 63, charged with the murder of Elaine Masias, will have a status conference on Aug. 4 while he remains in jail on a $1 million bond. Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ On Thursday, July 17, Pueblo police arrested two men after officers responded to a call on the 1700 block of Joliet Avenue where they found burglary suspect Joseph Mares tied with duct tape after a group beat him up during an alleged break-in (Mares faces second-degree burglary charges and Cruz Alarcon is charged with second-degree assault and felony menacing). - ➤ District 11 is reevaluating its budget after an unexpected freeze on federal funding removed nearly $3.5 million needed for key school programs. Superintendent Michael Gall said the district will manage the shortfall with state carryover funds (the freeze represents less than 1% of the overall $450M budget) as the new school year approaches.
