- ➤ On October 4, the Pueblo Latino Veterans Committee will honor five local veterans from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps at the Pueblo Convention Center — 320 Central Main St. The ceremony will start at 5 p.m. with guest speaker Joe Aldaz and requires a $50 ticket purchase with seating arranged by Gloria Gutierrez. - ➤ Posada is hosting a back to school giveaway on August 9 at Bethlehem MBC in Pueblo near Spruce Street and Arroyo Avenue in Bessemer—students will get free school supplies and haircuts funded by a $12,000 donation from Mental Health America—ensuring families can ease back-to-school costs. KOAA
- ➤ On Thursday, July 31, the City of Pueblo will reopen the Slab at 2709 North Elizabeth Street—featuring a new concrete structure, updated posts, benches, LED lighting and artwork by local artists. The event begins at 1 p.m. with a ribbon cutting and family activities like a shot clock game and skills drills, supported by Colorado Lottery funds at a cost of $500,000. FOX21
- ➤ Colorado Parks and Wildlife teamed with Children’s Hospital and local foundations (including the Drennen’s Dreams Foundation) to launch free life jacket stations at Lake Pueblo State Park after four drownings this year occurred among non-wearers. Two fathers who lost their children urge all water users (especially families) to wear life jackets to help prevent more tragedies. KKTV
- ➤ Ariel Clinical Services opened its new office on West 8th Street today to help Pueblo families with foster care services and support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The agency vets and certifies foster families so children can stay in their community — and it is seeking more local foster caregivers. KOAA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Pueblo man, 25-year-old Sebastian Cleaver, pleaded guilty on July 10 to a count of sexual exploitation of a child after police found more than 200 videos and images (four other charges were dropped) on his cellphone and he will face sentencing on October 2 with a plea agreement that limits his term to two years while he registers as a sex offender. - ➤ County District Attorney Michael Allen and Sen. Judy Amabile discussed flaws in Colorado’s competency laws after the 2024 hit-and-run case against Joel Lang was dismissed for incompetency on June 27—Lang is set to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on August 1 while Kristy Kerst’s family plans a protest to demand changes in the state’s mental health system. - ➤ This November, voters in Widefield School District 3 will decide on an $88 million bond for urgent school repairs and a $5 million mill levy override to support teacher salaries and safety programs. The measures aim to address repairs at over 14 schools—including asbestos removal, HVAC upgrades, and classroom expansion—and if approved, may add about $22 per month to a $400,000 home’s cost. KOAA
