- ➤ Pueblo authorities confirmed that Merlin J. Ortiz, 32, was fatally shot on Aug. 6 in the 1200 Block of Elm Street—footage from the Real-Time Crime Center captured the incident, marking the city’s eighth homicide of 2025. Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ A Pueblo woman who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a December 2023 DUI wreck was awarded $1.36 million in damages after a four-day trial ended Aug. 1—courts found that the drunk driver lost control while speeding in a 35-mph zone on West 4th Street and Abriendo Avenue. Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ Pueblo police investigated a shooting early Wednesday morning on East Mesa Avenue near I-25 and Northern Avenue that left 31 year old Merlin Z. Ortiz dead and video footage from the Real-Time Crime Center may help lead authorities to a suspect. KOAA

- ➤ Pueblo School District 60 partnered with Pueblo Transit to offer free rides so students do not miss school due to transportation issues. The buses, which require a student ID and stop near high schools, will provide a flexible and safe option — helping improve attendance this coming school year. KKTV

- ➤ Jerry Pacheco left his position as Urban Renewal Director on Aug.7 after Pueblo Mayor Heather Graham complained about his unprofessional remarks about city staff—he served nearly 10 years. The board named Cherish Deeg as interim director and may consider future consulting with him. Pueblo Chieftain
- ➤ The Colorado Springs Fire Department announced that retired Captain Patrick Rogacki died on August 1 from job-related cancer linked to his work at Ground Zero after 9/11 — he served 35 years and helped develop high-angle rescue techniques, and his private memorial service will be scheduled soon — local residents are invited to honor his legacy. - ➤ On Aug 5, the Department of Justice published a new list of sanctuary jurisdictions that names Colorado and Denver but does not include Pueblo County—despite a previous DOJ list having mentioned it.
