The Pueblo Zoo may close in three to four years if continued city budget cuts drive down funding—from $1,063,000 in 2024 to a proposed $767,655 in 2026—and lead to loss of accreditation by 2028.

Zoo Director Abbie Krause said low pay and staff shortages make it hard to maintain animal care and requested an extra $944,000 (to help stabilize operations) while council members expressed strong support for saving the zoo.
