- ➤ Pueblo-based Stoke Pizza won its second Governor's Plate Award at the Colorado State Fair on Aug 27, thanks to its wood-fired pizza made with local meat, Pueblo green chile, and Colorado honey. The win adds to its previous awards as four of the five food trucks in the competition were from Pueblo. Pueblo Chieftain

- ➤ A Pueblo woman, Corena Rose Minjarez, was given two life sentences without parole after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse in the 2018 deaths of two children in her care—prosecutors said she hid the bodies despite claims that her co-defendant acted alone. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Colorado Department of Transportation launched a public outreach campaign to urge drivers to slow down after 237 traffic deaths were linked to speeding last year. In the past five years, more than 1,000 people died in speed-related crashes and pedestrian deaths rose by 34%—showing the need for safer driving. KOAA
- ➤ Mayor Heather Graham will host town hall meetings in all four districts of Pueblo throughout September with events on Sept. 3 at El Centro del Quinto Sol, Sept. 11 at the Robert Hoag Rawlings Library, Sept. 16 at Lamb Library, and Sept. 24 at Barkman Branch Library—residents are invited to attend and ask questions about city updates. - ➤ Three community members including David Jiron of the American GI Forum filed a notice with Pueblo County to recall Coroner Brian Cotter—who is under investigation for improperly storing bodies at Davis Mortuary. Pueblo County will next estimate the recall cost and the organizers will need about 16,000 valid signatures to proceed. KOAA
- ➤ Pueblo West board president Bill Vickers on Aug. 25 presented an alternative $4.52 million indoor swimming pool plan featuring an 85-by-140-foot metal building with a lap pool—avoiding a sprinkler system—with hopes of finishing the stalled project faster and with lower operating costs. The board also discussed replacing the district office roof for about $143,000 and reviewed a letter of intent for up to 200 rental homes on district land. Pueblo Chieftain

- ➤ CSU-Pueblo Football is building on last season's RMAC title and D2 playoff bye—coach Philip Vigil said the team will use their close playoff loss as a lesson. The Thunderwolves, led by star quarterback Reggie and All-American receiver Roman, will start the season with three straight Thursday night games beginning today at the Thunderbowl against South Dakota Mines.
