Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 8th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents on Pueblo's east side are worried about speeding on Constitution Road as children use the crosswalk to get to nearby schools—Melanie Chavez said that dangerous speeds and a lack of proper warning signs have led to several close calls. Local police patrol the area regularly and urge drivers to slow down while neighbors ask for flashing lights to improve safety.  KOAA
  • The Meadows Park Community Center in Stratton Meadows will close Friday because of a budget shortfall.  KKTV
  • Ruby at Pueblo Zoo had a baby monkey today with Kanoa—Zoo officials say the birth shows the De Brazza’s monkeys are thriving. The infant joins sibling Delilah—evidence the monkey family is growing strong.  KKTV
  • Officials said detours will begin soon on I-25 and Highway 50B while the Meadows Park Community Center in Stratton Meadows will close Friday because of a budget shortfall; Pueblo leaders are asking for more funds and the news also features Ivy as the pet of the week—bringing a cheerful note to local updates.  KKTV
  • The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region Pueblo is asking the city and county for more funding as its shelter now takes in about 8,200 animals a year—a 58% increase since 2022 that strains its capacity and forces the transfer of roughly 2,000 animals annually. City budget talks next week will decide if the society can secure a new contract and proper resources before its current agreement ends this year.  KKTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Colorado's sports betting revenue surged last month, generating over $3.7 million in tax revenue—56% higher than August—so the funds will support water conservation projects across the state.  KOAA

FINANCE NEWS

  • Pueblo was named one of the best places to retire because its low cost of living means $1.5 million in savings can last a retiree about 39 years — the city offers low housing, food, and tax costs along with scenic views and community events that boost its appeal. Local studies show that Pueblo stands out for both its affordability and lifestyle benefits.  Pueblo Chieftain

Motorists are advised to use Highway 47 for access until the interchange work is complete.  KKTV
