COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Centennial High School re-dedicated its Veterans Wall on Oct. 9 to honor 400 service members including Medal of Honor recipient Drew Dix—using a saved white tile with an American eagle design from the old school as a symbol of local pride. The new wall stands at the rebuilt campus entrance and shows the community's commitment to remembering its heroes.  KOAA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local principal Derion Ibarra, owner of Greatness Gym and leader at Trinity Lutheran School, is running for the Pueblo D60 Board of Education. He vows to boost school safety+support teachers by providing more preparation time and eliminating out-of-pocket expenses if elected.  Pueblo Chieftain

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado lawmakers plan to reform the state’s competency laws—current statutes require that defendants found incompetent to stand trial and unable to be restored to competency have their cases dismissed and be released. The proposed changes may alter how future criminal cases are handled.  KKTV
  • Despite the U.S. government shutdown, Pueblo Memorial Airport flights will continue as scheduled under the Essential Air Service program—backed by $41 million in additional DOT funding—to keep service running into early November. Denver Air Connection stated its flight schedule will remain unchanged for now.  Pueblo Chieftain
  • Southern Colorado leaders are pushing to change laws that let people charged with crimes walk free when they cannot be restored to competency—officials say these rules leave victims at risk. Lawmakers and community groups plan to boost mental health resources and build secure care facilities to help prevent tragedies like the hit and run that killed Kristy Kerst.  KKTV
