COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center is working hard to help veterans as the government shutdown enters its second week, with more people visiting its food drive and needing rent and job support. The center also needs local volunteers for a homeless stand down on October 21 — donations of nonperishable items keep its pantry stocked.  FOX21
  • MSgt Trent Larm surprised his daughter Lena in her classroom after returning early from his overseas deployment. Lena’s mother said the unexpected reunion, supported by school staff, made the moment very special—creating a memory that will last.  KOAA
  • Pueblo Centennial High School rededicated its Veterans Wall on Oct. 9 at its new building at 2525 Mountview Drive to honor veterans from local schools. The wall displays preserved plaques from earlier locations and sections honoring local Medal of Honor recipients +including Drew Dix+ who addressed students at the ceremony.  Pueblo Chieftain
  • Nearly 150 people gathered in Pueblo as dual demonstrations marked the 120th anniversary of the Columbus Monument and Indigenous Peoples’ Day; the Order of Sons of Italy held a ceremony around 10 a.m. — Indigenous activists marched from Hinkle Park with dancers at the statue.  KKTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Oct. 13 Columbus Day ceremony, supporters and protestors gathered at Mesa Junction around the 1905 Columbus monument—one group praised its role in celebrating Italian-American and immigrant contributions while the other decried it as a symbol of genocide and historical injustice. Speakers highlighted the monument’s long history and ongoing debates about cultural pride and remembrance.  Pueblo Chieftain

  • The government shutdown continues to cause hardships for Southern Colorado families and a local veterans group—residents report fear over long delays in services—and state officials are working to restore federal benefits soon.  KKTV
