Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 23rd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pueblo Cooperative Care saw a surge in food requests from local families after the federal government shutdown three weeks ago, with 25 new families signing up last week and 12 on Monday. The nonprofit is hosting food drives and working with local farmers to secure extra supplies — its warehouse is nearly empty.  KOAA
  • Multiple family friendly spooky events are set across southern Colorado, featuring costume contests, trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving at venues such as Pueblo Riverwalk, Pueblo Zoo and the Buell Children’s Museum. Activities will run from Oct. 17 to Oct. 26—offering local families safe and engaging Halloween fun.  FOX21

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Riverstone Academy opened quietly last August in Pueblo County with about 30 students in four classrooms in a leased space, offering a public education with a Christian foundation. The school is now asking for state funding, a move that may lead to a legal fight as officials say public schools must be nonsectarian—local education boards and the state Department of Education are reviewing its eligibility.  Pueblo Chieftain

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper held a virtual meeting with National Parks workers while in Washington to talk about a budget proposal that may cut one-third of funds for federal land agencies. Tracy Coppola said 25% of park staff have been fired and over 100 superintendent roles remain unfilled—delaying key projects like archaeological studies and controlled burns.  FOX21
