Good morning, Pueblo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 24th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Colorado Springs Police Department thanked the community for donating over $68,000 to support K9 Roam after he was injured on Oct. 15 during an incident with a barricaded suspect and underwent emergency surgery that included amputation before returning home on Oct. 18—donations came from Colorado, 32 states, Canada, the UK, and Belgium.  FOX21

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Amanda Weidner, the CSU Pueblo County Extension Office horticulture specialist, advised residents that native seeds can be sown from late November to early January to help them get the cold and moisture exposure needed for spring germination. She recommended marking planted spots with tags (to avoid later confusion with weeds) and noted that some seeds may sprout only in later years.  Pueblo Chieftain

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Colorado voters will decide on two ballot measures that may determine the fate of free school meals for every K-12 student; Proposition LL would keep surplus revenue in the Healthy School Meals for All program and Proposition MM would tax households earning over $300,000—if both pass, free meals will continue and expand, but if either fails, funding could be cut by 2026.  KOAA
  • Governor Jared Polis asked for $10 million to help food banks after a federal shutdown froze SNAP benefits that many Pueblo families rely on—this money will be given in three payments on Nov 1, Nov 15 and Dec 1 to help buy food until the program restarts. Local officials warn that more delays could make life harder for those who depend on these benefits.  Pueblo Chieftain
  • On Oct. 23, the Pueblo Police Department and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office held a check presentation using funds raised from a June golf tournament and a September SAFE event — the money will support a memorial for fallen officers and help groups like the Pueblo Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Foundation and the Pueblo Police Benevolent Association.  FOX21
